Personal Oral Hygiene Advice from Milton Keynes Dental Dental Care
Plaque + Sugar = decay and gum disease The aim therefore is to reduce the plaque and reduce the sugar If you can eliminate plaque and sugar in the mouth there will be NO ACTIVE DECAY and NO ACTIVE GUM DISEASEThe Answer
Clean all the tooth surface at least once a day Remove plaque from the stagnation areas in the mouth (wisdom tooth gum flaps) Keep the tongue clean. The tongue is a huge reservoir of bacteria, and this is especially true of the back of the tongue. A scrapper combined with mouth wash is the way to go. Reduce the amount and frequency of Sugars, especially refined sugars. Electric Tooth Brushes are best, but don't forget to change the brushes. Cleaning between the teeth is essential either by Floss or Interdental Brushes. We recommend Tepe's. Cleaning between the teeth is essential part of avoiding bad breath. When using Tepe's its a good idea to stick them in toothpaste as this lubricates them, but don't overdose!! Cleaning under bridges is essential as well. We suggest "Super Floss." Toothpaste
Fluoride Toothpastes are the easiest and safest way to keep your teeth and gums healthy Sometimes we recommend a highly fluoridated toothpaste and this is usually related to the treatment of existing dental problems and the prevention of further problems. For children iot is important to make sure they do not swallow excessive amounts of Fluoride.Toothbrushes
In almost every case we suggest an Electric Toothbrush.Mouthwashes
They all do much the same thing: they either 1. Reduce the plaque in your mouth or they 2. Contain fluoride or desensitizing agents or they 3. Do both They are useful but also if used in the long term are quite expensive Read the label and follow the instructions. Avoid the ones with alcohol.Floss and Tape
We rarely find patients with no gum disease who do not floss or use tape on a regular and frequent basis. Using Floss and Tape is essential for patients with complex restorations like crowns and bridges We will always show you how to use it.Interdental Brushes and Tepe's
